Why Most Agencies Don't Care About Your Results

Most agencies get paid whether your site performs or not. Here's why the incentives are broken — and what to look for in a partner who actually has skin in the game.

Why Most Agencies Don't Care About Your Results

Here's an uncomfortable truth nobody in the industry says out loud: most agencies get paid the same whether your site brings in customers or not. Once the invoice clears, the incentive to keep improving your results disappears.

The broken incentive

The standard agency model is fixed fee, one-time delivery. You pay for a website. You get a website. Whether that website ranks, converts, or generates a single lead is not part of the contract. The agency's job — as they define it — is done.

Signs the agency doesn't care about your results

  • They never ask what your average customer is worth.
  • There's no conversion goal in the proposal — just deliverables.
  • They can't tell you the last three sites they built that generated leads.
  • Post-launch support means bug fixes, not performance reviews.
  • They pitch the design first, the strategy never.

What an aligned partner looks like

The right partner cares because their reputation, and often their revenue, depend on it. Look for retainer or performance-based pricing, measurable KPIs written into the brief, and a monthly review of what's working and what isn't.

"If your agency wins whether or not you do, you're not a client — you're an ATM."

You don't need a bigger agency. You need one whose success is tied to yours. That's the difference between a vendor and a partner.
